Senator Whitehouse Says GOP Tax Bill Helps The Wealthy At Expense Of Workers

(Washington, DC) – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island says the Republican tax bill is lining the pockets of the wealthy at the expense of workers. In the weekly Democratic address, Whitehouse said the Koch brothers, who are one of the Republican party’s biggest donors, reaped billions of dollars off the GOP tax bill.tax-chart-e1512079737990He said they even threw a 500-thousand-dollar tip to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s political fund as a “gesture of appreciation.” Whitehouse says corporations are using the large sums of money they’re getting to buy back their own stocks. He said this is great for big shareholders and the CEO’s compensation, but it’s not doing much help to workers. Whitehouse said this week the nonpartisan congressional budget office estimated the deficit will balloon to almost one-trillion-dollars, next year.

He added that the GOP tax bill, alone, will add nearly two-trillion-dollars to the nation’s deficit over the next decade.

GOP’s Hurd: Nunes’ Memo Does Not Vindicate Trump

Republican Representative Will Hurd tells ABC’s “This Week” he doesn’t believe the document is an attack on Russia investigation special counsel Robert Mueller.

Hurd says, “I want to stress, Bob Mueller should be allowed to turn over every rock, pursue every lead so that we can have trust in knowing what actually the Russians did or did not do.” Hurd says the memo is not an attack on Mueller or the men and women in the FBI.devin-nunes-trump-surveillance-campaign-investigation-house-intel-committee-russiaIn related news, the top House Democrat on the Intelligence Committee says Committee Chairman Devin Nunes’ staff worked with the White House on the controversial Republican-drafted intelligence memo.  Democratic Representative Adam Schiff tells ABC’s “This Week,” he thinks “it’s very possible his (Nunes) staff worked with the White House and coordinated the whole effort.”

Nunes, a Calfifornia Republican, has denied working with the White House on the four-page document. Nunes also would not respond to questions concerning whether staff consulted with the West Wing.

Trump And Pence Blame Democrats For Shutdown While Americans Hold Trump And GOP Responsible

(Washington, DC) – Vice President Mike Pence is sharing his thoughts on the government shutdown. While on his way to the Middle East, Pence said that Senate Democrats chose to put politics ahead of the national defense and ahead of meeting the obligations of the national government. He called it unacceptable and disappointing to millions of Americans. The Vice President is traveling to Egypt, Jordan and Israel for four days to discuss moving the U.S. Embassy. The government ran out of money at midnight, Eastern time after the Senate failed to advance a spending extension.

The House approved a one-month spending extension Thursday night. The effects of a shutdown will start being felt Monday morning when federal offices normally reopen. The shutdown occurs on the first anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration.

Amid the shutdown, Trump cancelled his trip to Florida this weekend. He woke up early tweeting that the Democrats care more about immigrants than they do the US Army.

A poll shows that Americans are putting the blame on Trump and the GOP’s shoulders. A “Washington Post”/ABC News poll says nearly 50-percent of Americans believe that Republicans in Congress are responsible for the shutdown; blaming them for a lack of compromise on issues like immigration laws, border security and alt-right agendas. Nearly 30-percent of Americans blame the Democrats for the shutdown, while some believe both parties are equally as responsible.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says he spoke with President Trump before the vote Friday and agreed to compromise on a U.S.-Mexico border wall in exchange for strong protections for illegal immigrants covered by the DACA program. He said Trump backed off the deal, and is responsible for “the Trump shutdown.” Schumer said Republicans control the legislative process and it’s their job to keep the government open.
