(El Paso, TX) -Texas Governor Greg Abbott says 20 people were killed in the El Paso shooting today. Over two dozen people are hospitalized when a lone gunman with an AK-47 opened fire at the Cielo Vista Mall Walmart.
El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen says it took six minutes from the active shooter call to police responding to the scene. He says the suspected gunman, a 21-year-old white male from the Dallas area, is in custody and is expected to be arraigned on capital murder charges.
Allen says the case may be prosecuted as a hate crime, due to a manifesto posted online, into which they are still investigating.
(Amarillo, TX) – Rapper 03 Greedo is reportedly heading to prison for 20 years on gun and drug charges. “Pitchfork” reports he was charged in 2016 with possession of over 400 grams of meth and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
He was supposedly handed down the 20-year sentence after pleading guilty to both charges last week in Amarillo, Texas. Greedo sent out a tweet last week apologizing to his fans for letting them down, and said he has new music that will be dropping soon.
A “free Greedo” hashtag has circulated on social media.
(Austin, TX) – Another explosion is being reported in Austin, Texas. Austin-Travis County EMS says the blast happened late this morning at a home in an Austin neighborhood, sending an elderly woman to a hospital. The parcel was found on the doorstep, brought into the home, then exploded when it was opened. Investigators say the blast is similar to one that happened March 2nd in Northeast Austin that left a man dead.
Another mail bomb from this morning left a teen dead. It’s the third explosion in the city so far this month.
Central Texas police believe the explosions are connected. Police want people to call 9-1-1 if they find any suspicious packages on front porches. The FBI and ATF are involved in the probe.
(CNN) – Instead of starting college a 19-year Houston man will be buried after accidentally killed himself Tuesday while taking selfies with a gun.
CNN reports the gun blast hit Deleon Alonso Smith in the throat. The teenager had two young children and was supposed to start attending college Wednesday. Smith’s sister said, “It’s just crazy how somebody could be here one minute. And in seconds, they gone.” She also said it wasn’t a suicide attempt.
Family members were shocked.
“It’s the worst feeling in my life,” Eric Douglas, the victim’s uncle said.
“It’s a numb feeling. It’s still unbelievable,” Smith’s grandmother Alma Douglas told the station. “Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and then to hear this kind of news.”
Investigator’s told CNN affiliate KPRC that Smith’s cousin was in another room at the time the gun went off.
The cousin told police they found the gun earlier in the day. They’re investigating.
