History Of Cinco de Mayo

(Dallas, TX) – Celebrations will be held all over the nation today in honor of Cinco de Mayo, which means May 5th in Spanish. It was on this date in 1862 when the outnumbered Mexican army defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon the Third at the Battle of Puebla.

The Mexican military victory evolved over the years to become what it is today, a celebration of the rich heritage of music, dance, food and culture. As the population of Mexican-Americans has increased over the years, so has the popularity of Cinco de Mayo, especially for states near the Mexican border.

There are an estimated 21 million Americans of Mexican descent living in the U.S.

White House Denies Trump Statements Demeaning Immigrants, But Given His Past Most Believe It

(Washington, DC) — The White House is denying a report that President Trump used demeaning language about immigrants in a meeting with top administration officials.

The “New York Times” wrote that in a June meeting, Trump said that people coming to America from Haiti “all have AIDS,” and that Nigerian immigrants would never, quote , “go back to their huts.”

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders issued a statement denying Trump made the comments and blasting the newspaper. She said others in the meeting, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and then Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly all deny the “outrageous claims.”

She accused the “New York Times” of printing lies from anonymous sources.

The Washington Post reports, Nigerian American Opal Tometi said Trump’s past comments about immigration and black people make the Times report believable. Tometi, executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration and a co-founder of Black Lives Matter, told the Fix via email:

“Unfortunately, it is all too believable that this is how our president speaks behind closed doors because his very public policies have been driven by racism and hatred since Day 1. From his xenophobic Muslim ban to his cruel and immoral treatment of immigrant dreamers, this merely adds crass words to the racist policies this administration has been pushing for a year.

“President Trump is mentally incapable of imagining the humanity of anyone who looks different from him or hails from a different nation,” Tometi added. “This is perhaps nowhere more true than of his treatment of black immigrants

Charging Prejudice Against Mexicans, 15 States And D.C. Sue The Government Over DACA

(SL) –  NBC News reports, Fifteen states and the District of Columbia sued the U.S. government Wednesday to block President Donald Trump’s plan to end protection against deportation for young immigrants, saying it was motivated by prejudice against Mexicans.

Legal experts, however, say the evidence of bias is not strong in the case involving the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

“It might be able to muck up the works, maybe push off the effective date of the repeal, but I don’t see litigation being successful in the same way as the travel ban,” Kari Hong, an immigration expert at Boston College Law School, said, referring to the lawsuit earlier this year that limited the Trump ban involving predominantly Muslim nations.

As indications of Trump’s bias, the suit filed Wednesday cited his previous statements referring to some Mexican immigrants as rapists and his decision to pardon former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted of contempt for ignoring a federal court order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.

“Ending DACA, whose participants are mostly of Mexican origin, is a culmination of President’s Trump’s oft-stated commitments — whether personally held, stated to appease some portion of his constituency, or some combination thereof — to punish and disparage people with Mexican roots,” the lawsuit filed in federal court in Brooklyn said.
