Warriors Hold Off Hawks, But It Wasn’t Easy

(Atlanta, GA) – Soooo…..Stephen Curry came out the gate throwing daggers and dropping bombs which resulted in a monstrous 25 pt first half for the guard (15 of those points came in the final seven minutes of the second qtr) allowing Golden State to build a sizeable lead (62-50) in the first two quarters.

But, in front of an almost sellout crowd, the Hawks had momentum and were prepared to attack and drive just as hard as the Warriors. Atlanta was so composed, Dennis Schröder even hit a shot two steps from half court. You had to be there :).

That was towards the end of the third and added to offensive drives that would ultimately put the Hawks within 2pts with just seconds left to play. Part of that comeback was due to a Curry-less Warriors team who had to play basically the whole second half without their leader.

Even though he said he wasn’t sure whose foot he stepped on, the tweak was so apparent that he was overruled in the decision to remain in the game and had to sit the rest of it out. IMG_8130-2_previewBut when you’re the defending champs, your roster runs so deep you can afford it. The Warriors got 28 from Kevin Durant, 16 from Nick Young, 15 from Klay Thompson and a game winning play by veteran Andre Iguodala.

However, it didn’t just happen like that. During a game that had all the makings of being a blowout, the Hawks didn’t surrender. You can’t deny the resiliency of this team and when they really start to click on both ends of the court, they’re capable of beating anybody really.

IMG_8257-2_previewWith that being said,  as the game entered its final stretch, the Hawks put some plays together that made the sun come out in the center of darkness. In the final two minutes Atlanta went on a 9-0 run led by none other than Dennis Schröder (27) and Kent Bazemore (29). Just like that the score was 111-109 with 19 seconds left.

Keeping the dream alive, the Hawks would foul Kevin Durant on their next possession resulting with the MVP leaving the line 1-1. 112-109. There’s still hope. But this is Golden State. In the Hawks’ final possession a series of passes left them vulnerable and just enough room for Iguodala to force the turnover to which he finished on the rim in championship dunk fashion and that was it. Final Score 114-109.

{Video} Kent Bazemore And The Hawks Fight Back From a 20 Point Deficit But Not Enough To Outplay Deep Clippers Team

It look liked a guaranteed win considering Blake Griffin and Chris Paul were out. But Atlanta struggled out the gate against a Clippers Team that’s loaded with shooters. The Hawks at one point were down by 20 but fought back and dropped their deficit to 9 at one point. It was a battle that they would eventually lose 115-105. Post Game Guard Kent Bazemore who led Atlanta with 25 points talks about being outplayed, not capitalizing on 2nd chance points and other disconnects that kept them from the W.

Hawks End Two Game Losing Streak, Beat Rockets 112-97

(Atlanta, GA) – The Atlanta Hawks got back on the win column at Philips Arena defeating the Houston Rockets 112-97 .  Coming in Dwight Howard dispelled rumors that he and James Harden had  beef. But he sure played like he was sending a clear message to the Rockets and Atlanta….Daddy’s home! It was a good one in the ATL as Millsap, Howard and Kent Bazemore got to work early jumping out on Houston and they never looked back.

Houston didn’t help themselves with more than 20 turnovers and a number of missed shots from the arc. I don’t think it would’ve mattered though had those stats been reversed. The Atlanta Hawks wanted to give D-12 a win and stick it Harden and the Rockets and they did just that.
Atlanta needed this win after losing 2 in a row (Lakers and Wizards) but as you can see with this new look ATL team, they don’t dwell on the past. Atlanta got back to their style of basketball and added some flare too with Dwight Howard posterized KJ McDaniels with a block that was clearly all ball but the refs called a foul.
Post game Howard was asked about the hug he gave the ref who made the call. Howard said he admitted that he made the wrong call and Howard was sure to let him know that everyone makes mistakes. lol. Kent Bazemore also resurfaced scoring 20 points. Paul Millsap was among the double double tribe with 23 points and 11 rebounds with Dwight Howard’s 20 points 14 boards and  Dennis Schroder’s 17 points 12 Assists.
As for the Hawks bouncing back after a tough loss against the Wizards, Coach Bud says, “You’ve been around our group.  You know there’s a lot of character, a lot of fiber.  when you lose and you don’t play and compete the way you’d like to and expect to, and what we’ve become accustomed to, you can’t wait to get out and play again.  It’s just a testament to their character, how they’re made up, how they’re built.”
Let’s take a look at the stats:
Houston hurt themselves with 25 TOs they also missed a lot of shots from the 3 going 12-3 and offensively they just weren’t hitting. Harden led the Rockets with 30. 24 of those were  from the 1st half. Atlanta on the other hand shot 52.9% from the field with Kent Bazemore hitting 20, Millsap 23, Howard 20, Korver 10 and Schroder 17. Up next the Hawks will head to Cleveland to take on Lebron and the Cavs.

Kent Bazemore and Mike Scott Lead Hawks To Blowout Over Celtics In Game 5

(SL) – The Hawks were looking for redemption and a chance to regain the lead in the series when they stepped on the court Tuesday.  After a slow 1st quarter, in which the hawks shot just 24% from the field, Kent Bazemore and Mike Scott would hit the boost button and take Atlanta to a 47-39 lead at the half.

DSC_9341It was pretty much over at that point.  By the end of the 3rd quarter, 5 Hawks’ players were in double digits and Atlanta was blowing out Boston 89-62. Celtics star guard Isaiah Thomas struggled from the field shooting just 3-12 from the field 0-4 from the arc.  He left the game early after rolling his ankle.  Post Game  I asked Bazemore and Scott what the strategy was for locking down Thomas. (Third Question)

Mike Scott led all players with 17 points while Bazemore had 16.  Jeff Teague also had 16 while Kyle Korver chipped in 13 and Paul Millsap was good for just 10 after scoring almost 50 points against the Celtics in game 4. Game 6 is Thursday in Boston!

Atlanta Holds Off Boston To Take Game 1 In The NBA Playoffs

(SL) – Let the games begin! It was a live one at Philips Arena for Game 1 of the NBA playoffs and the Atlanta Hawks came out aggressive and made a statement. They’ve been here before and certainly the goal is to take care of the Celtics and get to round 2. Atlanta held Boston To just 23% shooting in the first half but started slacking on defense and before you knew it their lead was down to just 3. But again, the Hawks have been here before and they were ready for battle and eventually won the war 102-101.  944938_1171835086173549_7590924775556123329_nAl Horford led the way with 24 points and 12 rebounds while Jeff Teague grabbed a double double as well with 23 pints and 12 assists. Teague was in attack mode. Post game he acknowledges their 2nd half defensive flaws and setting the tone for the series.

Kent Bazemore was also on fire pulling in a season high 23 points and 8 rebounds. Coach Mike Budenholzer talked about Baze’s focus and gives him credit for stepping up and helping the Hawks come alive for game 1.

Hawks Battle Back From Flipflop Start To Beat Suns 103-90

(SL) – The Atlanta Hawks took on their last West coast opponent in Philips Arena when they hosted the Phoenix Suns Tuesday night. It was a beautiful and horrible start all at the same time, but in the end everything would work out.

A 16-3 run  put the Hawks in front of the Suns halfway through the 1st quarter, but a timeout by Phoenix proved to be effective in calming things down. The Suns responded with a 13-2 run that included three shots from the arc to retake the lead at 22-20. DSC_6624Defense was not a strong point for the Hawks, allowing 38 points in 12 minutes, 8-for-11 from beyond the arc.  Phoenix was on fire, but when the dust settled, the Hawks regrouped.DSC_6624When the 4th quarter started, everything started to click for the Hawks. Atlanta with a 26-6 spurt gave the home team a 96-79 lead with less than five minutes remaining and seemingly dimmed all the light in the Suns. They simply had no comeback. DSC_6742As usual,Paul Millsap was that dude, finishing with 13 points, 17 rebounds and 8 assists , while Al Horford had (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Kent Bazemore (16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) put together most of  rest. Defensively, the Hawks will have to pull it together for playoffs. Atlanta will have to be strong in all areas if they plan on making it past the 1st round.

Hawks Solidify Spot In Playoffs With 95-83 Win Over Grizzlies

(Atlanta, GA) – After coming back from a 12 day trip that produced 3 wins for Atlanta, the Hawks were more than happy to be back home against the Grizzlies Saturday night and even more elated after taking another W.
This wasn’t just any victory thought.  The Hawks need one more victory to earn a sot in the playoffs and they managed to do solidify positioning against a shorthanded Memphis team.
The injury list for the Grizzlies is long. Centers Chris Anderesen and Marc Gasol are out along with forwards Zach Randolph and Brandan Wright. Guards Mike Conley and Vince Carter were also on the DNP list.. And let’s hope Lance Stephenson doesn’t join them after falling on his wrist.  Stephenson said, “I’ll be all right .” He led the Grizzlies with 18 points coming off of a career high 33 points against the Pelicans.
Atlanta took full advantage of the shortage though. Careful not underestimate a disadvantaged Memphis team, the Hawks played defensive smart ball and rolled right through.
Thabo Sefolosha said, thinking a few key players are out and it’s going to be easy is a trap you don’t want to fall into .  Sefolosha logged his first double double of the season.
Paul Millsap led the Hawks with 21 points while Al Horford 19 and Jeff Teague put 18 on the board. Kent Bazemore was scoreless but productive in defense contributing to Atlanta’s 12 blocks and 27 assists.
Atlanta is right back at it Sunday hosting the Pacers while Memphis will take a day off before taking on the Rockets in Houston.
