Study: 5,000 Deaths In Puerto Rico Tied To Hurricane Maria

(Cambridge, MA) – Deaths related to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico could be higher than first thought. Officially, the death toll is at 64, but that could be closer to five-thousand if a new Harvard University study is to be believed.

A survey of more than three-thousand households indicates as many as 46-hundred-45 more deaths happened than would have under normal conditions. Researchers say a third of the deaths can be attributed to delayed or interrupted healthcare.

The survey covered from the time the storm made landfall on September 20th to December 31st. The study was published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” today.

Alberto Brings Flood Watches To Gulf Coast

(SL) – Flood watches are in effect in parts of the Southeast as the first storm of the hurricane season moves over the Caribbean Sea.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is expected to move north across the Gulf of Mexico through the Memorial Day weekend, bringing possible flash flooding, rip currents and strong winds to parts of the Gulf Coast, and potentially spawning tornadoes.

Tropical winds of 40-miles-per-hour and storm surge are possible from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle by late in the weekend. Up to four inches of rain is possible from southern Florida to the Carolinas over the next five days.
