(SL) — Researchers in China say they’ve performed what they call the first-ever chemical surgery to remove disease from human embryos. The scientists say they used a technique that corrects a single error in three-billion letters of genetic code. The technique is called base editing and it alters the basic building blocks of DNA. The procedure announced today could one day be used to treat a range of inherited diseases.

(Washington, DC) — President Trump is ready to take healthcare reform into his own hands. A day after the latest Republican attempt to repeal Obamacare failed, Trump told reporters he probably will sign an executive order next week that could affect millions of people. He said the order will allow people to cross state lines to buy health care among many other things. Many Republicans, including Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, have advocated for selling insurance across state lines. Supporters claim it would increase competition and reduce rates. Opponents say it will raise the rates of those most in need of healthcare.

(Louisville, KY) — A federal judge says Kentucky’s abortion law violates doctors’ First Amendment rights. The law would require doctors to conduct ultrasounds and describe the image to a pregnant woman before she can consent to an abortion. U.S. District Judge David Hale ruled Wednesday that the law violates doctors’ free speech rights. The ACLU challenged the law on behalf of a Louisville clinic that is Kentucky’s only abortion provider. In barring the state from enforcing the law, the judge wrote that it appears to inflict psychological harm on abortion patients.

Businessmen talking in conference room(Ithaca, NY) — You might want to think twice before drinking from your office coffee mug. According to NDTV, a new study published in The Journal of Dairy, Food, and Environmental Sanitation noted that 90% of office coffee mugs were coated with germs (90%!) and 20% of those mugs actually had fecal matter on them. They say kitchen sponges that are rarely changed are the source.

The study was first published in the journal “Dairy, Food and Environmental Sanitation” out of New York’s Cornell University. Hundreds of bacterial strains have been identified, including E. coli. Researchers suggest taking your mug home each night and putting it through your dishwasher.

And it gets worse. Apparently, your chance of coming into contact with E. coli actually increases if your mug has been wiped down with the office dishcloth or sponge. In the study, the bacteria wasn’t present at all in cups before they were wiped down, but was on 20% of them afterward. Coliform bacteria was present on 20% of the cups before wiping, and 100% afterward.

Could You Do It? Charlie Gard’s Parents Decide To Let Him Die After Tests Show Lack Of Treatment Has Deteriorated His Chances

(SL)- The parents of Charlie Gard bitterly condemned doctors yesterday after they made the heartbreaking decision to let their baby son die.

Connie Yates reduced a courtroom to tears while accusing Great Ormond Street of wasting so much time her little boy no longer had hope.

‘We are so sorry we couldn’t save you,’ she said.

‘We had the chance but we weren’t allowed. Sweet dreams baby. Sleep tight our beautiful little boy.

We now have 7 experts supporting therapy for Charlie’s condition which I think is proof that it was more than reasonable to try it. Nucleosides are simply a powder that would’ve gone into Charlie’s milk and are compounds which all of us in this room produce naturally.

Unfortunately, Charlie can’t produce these due to his disease, which is why he is the way he is. We want people to realise that we have been speaking to parents whosechildren were just like Charlie before starting treatment and now some of them are walking around like normal children. We wanted Charlie to have that chance too.

Our son has an extremely rare disease for which there is no accepted cure but that does not mean that this treatment would not have worked, and it certainly does not mean that this shouldn’t have been tried. We have only been asking for a 3 month trial of treatment to see if there was any improvement. We have been asking for this short trial for the past 8 months.

Charlie did have a real chance of getting better if only therapy was started sooner. It was never false hope as confirmed by many experts. Now we will never know what would have happened if he got treatment but it’s not about us. It’s never been about us. It’s about what’s best for Charlie now. At the point in time when it has become too late for Charlie we have made the agonizing decision to let him go.

This has also never been about ‘parents know best’. We have continuously listened to experts in this field and it has raised fundamental issues, ethically, legally and medically – this is why the story of one little boy from two normal everyday people has raised such conflicting opinions and ferocious arguments worldwide.

All we wanted to do was take Charlie from one world renowned hospital to another world renowned hospital in the attempt to save his life and to be treated by the world leader in mitochondrial disease. We feel that we should have been trusted as parents to do so but we will always know in our hearts that we did the very best for Charlie and I hope that he is proud of us for fighting his corner.

We will have to live with the ‘what if’s’ which will haunt us for the rest of our lives but we’re thinking about what’s best for our son. We have always believed that Charlie deserved a chance at life and we knew that his brain was not as bad it was made out to be and that’s why we continued.

Usher Being Sued Again By Woman He Slept With In April For Exposing Her To Herpes

(SL) – The 38 year old singer is named in a new $10 million lawsuit from a woman who claims he didn’t tell her he has herpes prior to their two hookups.

In the new suit, the woman claims she performed oral sex on Raymond and had protected sex with him on April 16 at her Atlanta residence.

The pair hooked up again in a hotel in New Orleans on April 28th of this year, where they didn’t use protection. The suit charges negligence, battery and emotional distress, but did not confirm whether or not she’s tested positive for it.

One out of every six people between the ages of 14 to 49 carry the herpes virus. The virus can be transmitted even when an individual does not have any visible signs. The woman learned about User’s status through recent reports about a 2012 court case in which he was sued for giving a woman herpes.

Usher has been married to Grace Miguel (pic) for almost 2 years.

Athletes Warned To Shower Straight After Leaving Water As RAW SEWAGE Pours Into Rio’s Guanabara Bay, Just Days After DEAD BODY And SEVERED ARM Were Found Floating In Water

(SL) – Bomb threats, traffic backed up for 74 miles and now raw sewage in the bay.  The problems just keep mounting for the upcoming Olympics in Rio as now some are dubbing the games the Poo-Olympics after athletes are being warned to shower straight after leaving the water as raw sewage runs into Guanabara Bay.

Pollution problems at the Rio Olympics has gotten so bad that officials moving, sailing or rowing boats are using gloves and medical workers are on standby to treat any infectious cuts, and athletes are showering after leaving the water.

Pictures of raw sewage pouring into the sea into Guanabara Bay in Rio have emerged as the countries competing try and put in place alternative plans to combat the constant environmental threat.

Guanabara Bay in Rio will host the triathlon, sailing and marathon swimming events at the Games.

The Daily Mail Reports, testing at several of the city’s world-famous beaches have shown high levels of bacteria relating to sewage pollution, and tourists have been warned to be careful.

The World Health Organisation did give the Olympic water venues in Guanabara Bay the green light after they had tested them for 60 days and said they were safe on the basis of bacterial testing, but not for viruses.

Last week competitors taking part in some of the aquatic events at the Games were warned not to open their mouths to avoid catching serious illnesses from the polluted water.

Health experts warned Olympic marathon swimmers, sailors and windsurfers competing in Rio’s Guanabara Bay – where a body was found floating in the lead up to the Games – to be ultra careful as the waters are much more contaminated than was previously thought.

Dutch Sailing team member Afrodite Zegers, says, “We just have to keep our mouths closed when the water sprays up.”  But one Brazilian doctor  warns that Olympic marathon swimmers will literally be swimming in human crap and risk getting sick from microorganisms.

Spanish women’s sailing team coach Nigel Cochrane described it as ‘disgusting’ and that they were ‘very concerned’ about it all despite reassurances from Olympic authorities.

According To The CDC, Half Of Gay Black Men Will Be Diagnosed With HIV

(SL) -According to the CDC, One in two gay and bisexual black men in the US will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime.

In contrast, one in four gay and bisexual Hispanic men will be diagnosed – and one in 11 gay and bisexual white men.

Comparatively, the overall odds of an average American developing HIV is just one in 99.

The Centers Of Disease Control And Prevention reports a number of factors may contribute to the higher risk of HIV associated with gay and bisexual black men.

People living in the District of Columbia have the highest risk of infection - one in 13 - followed by Maryland (one in 49), Georgia (one in 51) and Florida (one in 54). In contrast, North Dakota residents face the lowest risk

WHY BLACK GAY MEN ARE AT RISK

In addition to risk factors affecting all gay and bisexual men, several factors are specific to black gay and bisexual men:

Socioeconomic factors

Blacks are more likely than men of some other races/ethnicities to experience socioeconomic factors that place them at higher risk for HIV infection.

Those factors include limited access to and use of quality health care, lower income and educational levels, and higher rates of unemployment and incarceration.

That factors may help explain why blacks have not made greater gains on the HIV continuum of care.

Smaller and exclusive sexual networks

Black gay and bisexual men are a small subset of all gay and bisexual men, and their partners tend to be of the same race.Overall, men who have sex with men face the highest risk of infection (one in six), followed by people who inject drugs. Heterosexual women face a higher risk of HIV - one in 241 - than heterosexual men - one in 473

Because of the small population size and the higher prevalence of HIV in that population relative to other races/ethnicities, black gay and bisexual men are at greater risk of being exposed to HIV within their sexual networks.

Sexual relationships with older men

Having sexual relationships with older men, who are more likely to have HIV, may increase risk for exposure amongsome young black gay and bisexual men.

Lack of awareness of HIV status

Though black gay and bisexual men report higher HIV testing in the past year than Hispanic/Latino or white gay and bisexual men, they are also more likely to be HIV-positive and not know it because of the higher prevalence of HIV in the population.

People who do not know they have HIV cannot take advantage of HIV care and treatment and may unknowingly pass HIV to others.

Source: CDC

By race, the CDC found that black men face the highest risk - at one in 20. Black women and Hispanic men have the same risk of HIV infection, however, at one in 48

The Truth About Charlie: Did Sheen Hide His Status?

(SL) –  It’s been a blind item for weeks.  Who is the A-list actor that is HIV positive? Fear of an epidemic was set considering the high caliber of the person and now we finally know who it is….Charlie Sheen.  Sad either way because it doesn’t take a thousand lays to get HIV…just one.

2E8A962F00000578-3321991-image-a-101_1447791276466One of Sheen’s recent exes, Bree Olson, told Howard Stern that he NEVER mentioned it.  Shortly after Olson appeared on Stern’s show another one of Sheen’s sexual partners, Natalie Kenly, came forward to say that the actor never told her either that he is HIV-positive.  On the other hand, another claims that she was 100 percent aware even to the point that she was taking antiretroviral medication to be with him.

Sheen would make all of his guests sign a confidentiality agreement before entering his home.  He reportedly paid strippers and porn stars up to 30,000 a night to party with him while he smoked crack-cocaine.

A total of six women are reportedly planning civil lawsuits and a lot of people are wondering if he will be criminally charged for potentially exposing his partners to HIV. It won’t be easy. In California it will be difficult.

One has to prove not that that person knew but  intentionally tried to hurt you. Charlie’s timeline is under scrutiny.  He told the Today Show that he learned of his status just 4 years ago after experiencing headaches and night sweats. Charlie said, “It’s a turning point in one’s life.”  Overall, It’s unclear when Sheen learned of his diagnosis.

Reality Check: Drug CEO Will Lower Price of Daraprim After Hike Sparked Outrage

(NBC News) – The pharmaceutical company boss under fire for increasing the price of the drug Daraprim by more than 5,000 percent said Tuesday he will lower the cost of the life-saving medication. Martin Shkreli did not say what the new price would be, but expected a determination to be made over the next few weeks.

He told NBC News that the decision to lower the price was a reaction to outrage over the increase in the price of the drug from $13.50 to $750 per pill.

MSMB Capital Management CIO Martin Shkreli
Martin Shkreli, chief investment officer of MSMB Capital Management, sits for a photograph in his office in New York, U.S., on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011. MSMB made an unsolicited $378 million takeover bid for Amag Pharmaceuticals Inc. and said it will fire the drugmaker’s top management if successful.
“Yes it is absolutely a reaction — there were mistakes made with respect to helping people understand why we took this action, I think that it makes sense to lower the price in response to the anger that was felt by people,” Shkreli said, 32.

Turing Pharmaceuticals of New York bought the drug from Impax Laboratories in August for $55 million and raised the price. Shkreli said Tuesday the price would be lowered to allow the company to break even or make a smaller profit.
