(Huntsville, TX-AP) — Texas is executing the man who committed one of the country’s most brutal hate crimes. John King was the second person put to death for the killing of James Byrd Jr. in 1998.
Prosecutors say King was the ringleader of a group that chained Byrd to the back of a pickup truck and dragged him for miles after Byrd reportedly asked for a ride home. The force ripped off Byrd’s arm and decapitated him.
Even more disturbing, reports say that James Byrd was alive for the majority of his torture prior to being dismembered.
The murder of the 49-year-old African American shocked the nation and sparked protests.
The Supreme Court denied a last-minute request for a stay of execution for the 44-year-old avowed racist. King was pronounced dead by lethal injection at the Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville shortly after 7 p.m.
(Washington, DC – AP) — President Trump is blasting this week’s developments in the Jussie Smollett case. He tweeted this morning “FBI & DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago. It is an embarrassment to our Nation!”
It comes after prosecutors in Chicago dropped all 16 charges the Empire actor was facing in connection with accusations he lied to police about an alleged racist and homophobic attack by two men wearing MAGA hats.
When the story first broke in January, Trump sympathized with Smollett saying “It doesn’t get worse, as far as I’m concerned.” After the actor was accused of staging the whole thing, Trump called out Smollett on Twitter, asking “What about MAGA and the tens of millions of people you insulted with your racist and dangerous comments?”
(Chicago, IL-AP) — Police are attempting to unravel the alleged attack on Empire actor Jussie Smollett. The saga began in January, when Smollet told police he received a racist and threatening letter that obtained a white powder. That “substance” was later determined to be aspirin. Then about a week later, the actor, who is black and gay, claimed he was assaulted by two white men in masks, wearing pro-President Trump hats who hurled racist and homophobic slurs. Smollett also claimed his attackers attached a small noose around his neck. The alleged attack became an international news event, with plenty of high-profile celebrities, politicians, and even President Trump expressing outrage. Chicago Police, the FBI, and other agencies launched a massive investigation.
About 48 hours later, police said they reviewed hundreds of hours of video footage, but were unable to find any direct evidence dealing with the attack. They also said Smollett turned over some, but not all, of the phone records detectives requested as part of their investigation. Smollett continued to say the attack was real, telling ABC’s Good Morning America that people would believe him if he was “attacked by black or Muslim guys.” On February 13th, Chicago police picked up two men at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport they identify as Nigerian brothers who are persons of interest. The next day, there were news reports that police are investigating whether Smollett and the two men staged the attack. Police denied those reports.
On February 15th, things took a major turn. Police said the “trajectory of the investigation” has “shifted” after cops released the two brothers without charges. Police wanted to re-interview Smollet, but the actor refused. Police seemed to ramp-up their investigation and unconfirmed reports starting swirling that Smollett would soon be arrested. Then this morning, Smollett was charged with filing a false police report. A very somber Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, who is also black, said Smollett staged the attack only to increase his salary. Johnson added Chicago didn’t deserve this “publicity stunt” and he was upset Smollett used the dark symbol of a noose. He said Smollett paid the brothers 35-hundred bucks to stage the attack and added that he believes Smollett mailed the original letter to himself.
(Washington, DC-AP) – Washington, DC police are investigating an assault in Georgetown as a possible hate crime. Maxim Smith is facing assault charges after allegedly hitting a black man in the head with a bike lock while using racial slurs.
It happened after the two got into an argument recently after the victim honked at Smith for being in the middle of the road on his bike. The victim reportedly needed 18 stitches on his head.
(Johnson County, KS) – The man who killed an Indian immigrant in a Kansas bar will spend the rest of his life in prison. Adam Purinton was sentenced to life in prison with no parole Friday for the shooting that left two others injured in February, 2017. Witness say Purinton yelled “get out of my country” before he opened fire in the bar in Olathe. The victim’s widow released a statement after the sentencing calling for people to work together to “spread love and stand up to hate.”
Purinton still faces federal hate crime charges.
(Boca Raton, FL) – A city famously known for its palm tree lined streets and affluence is now being characterized by a brutal hate crime. Authorities don’t want to use that terminology but let’s call a spade a spade. More over the top bullying by a group of girls that thought jumping the 14-year old would be the ‘bad ass’ thing to do. I can think of a few other names to describe her attackers, but we’ll keep it journalistic.
According to police, Manaal Munshi went to a park in Boca Raton, Fla., earlier this week to try to work out her differences with another girl. When she arrived, she found a crowd of students and more than one girl waiting for her.
A video posted on Facebook shows the attack and has been viewed by over 2 million people.
Her father says she went to discuss the problem with a young lady after being constantly bullied. As the video begins, one girl already has Munshi by the hair and as she throws her to the ground she’s joined by more girls who begin pounding her with their fists. Shouts of “Beat her ass!” and “Pull her hair!” can be heard.
It’s unclear what caused the dispute. Her dad believes it was motivated by her Muslim status. Police are denying the attack was a hate crime, saying instead that it was over a boyfriend.
Were all three of the girls dating the same guy? Come on Boca! These cowards should face charges and anyone who had their cellphone out recording it, she face punishment too. What’s it going to take to put an end to the internet culture that encourages kids to record for likes instead of calling for help.
