(Gainesville, FL) – Craig Arttez Brewer, 41, was paying it forward early Sunday morning at a Waffle House in Gainesville, Fl on West Newberry Rd near the University of Florida.
There were dozens of people dining at around 3am when Brewer decided to randomly pay for people’s food and pass out money.
Reportedly, one young lady became upset that Brewer hadn’t paid for her food and the young man that she was with, 25-year old Ezekiel Hicks, allegedly grew angry as well.
“The victim was engaging folks at the restaurant, and there was a disagreement with a female customer,” said Lt. Brett Rhodenizer, according to The Gainesville Sun.
Authorities say that’s when Hicks confronted Brewer and the two got into an argument.
Brewer’s cousin, Rasheeda Johnson told WGFL that Craig was just helping others and she still doesn’t understand why Ezekiel was so angry.
On the first 911 call, a Waffle House employee said they needed help with a large group of about 30-40 people that were arguing with each other. She told the dispatcher that it hadn’t gotten physical yet and no weapons were present but that they needed help controlling the situation.
All that changed within minutes.
According to reports, Hicks went and got a gun out of his car. At least one person tried to stop him from going back inside, but he went anyway. Upon reentry, he confronted Brewer and within seconds it turned physical and Hicks pulled a gun from his pants, believed to be a 9mm, and shot Brewer in the head.
Officers were already en route and arrived just moments after Brewer was shot. Ezekiel ran off but apparently didn’t get too far. He was arrested near the scene. Brewer’s cousin says she tried to help him, but his injuries were too severe.
“When he shot him I instantly tried to stop the bleeding,” Johnson said. “That’s all I was really focusing on trying to stop the bleeding. Maybe I could save him, maybe I could help him. But there was nothing I could really do.”
Before EMS arrived, police had already covered Brewer with a white sheet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The whole situation was caught on surveillance video and is naturally being used as evidence. Ezekiel Hicks was arrested and charged with premeditated first degree murder and carrying an unlicensed firearm.
He’s being held without bond.
