Record Cold Predicted Next Week in Central and Eastern U.S.

(AP) – An Arctic cold snap heading to the U.S. is expected to break records across two-thirds of the country. Temperatures are expected to nosedive next week, as a cold front rolls across the central and eastern U.S.

The Arctic blast will begin Sunday in the northern Plains and upper Midwest, and then spread into the southern Plains and Ohio Valley on Monday, reaching the East Coast and Deep South by Tuesday.

Forecasters say Monday could be the coldest Labor Day on record in cities such as Chicago and Minneapolis, and that record cold will stretch into the Ohio Valley and Northeast by Tuesday.

High temperatures in the 30s are predicted as far south as Alabama by Tuesday. Forecasters say 170 record-cold temperatures are possible across the country by Wednesday.

Nine Dead From Polar Vortex

(Iowa City, IA_AP) — The freezing cold weather hitting the Midwest is claiming at least nine lives. The latest death happened in Iowa, where a student at the University of Iowa died after being found behind a campus building early Wednesday morning.

Another person died in Iowa in a weather-related car crash. Three people were killed in Illinois. Deaths were also recorded in Indiana, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Temperatures across the Midwest are well below zero because of a polar vortex pulling freezing air into the area.
