(McAllen, TX) – Today marks the beginning of a 24 day long hunger strike that is being led by civil rights activist Dolores Huerta and members of the Kennedy family. At a rally in McAllen, Texas yesterday, Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, joined Huerta to announce the strike and the 44 members of the Kennedy family who will be taking part.
Each participant plans to fast for 24 hours at a time, for 24 days in total in honor of the approximately 24-hundred children who have been separated from their families. Other participants include 11 members of Congress, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Alfre Woodard, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Meanwhile, the President wants authorities to waste no time deporting migrants who cross the border illegally. On Twitter, Trump said that when someone comes into the country “we must immediately, with no judges or court cases, bring them back from where they came.” He called the U.S. immigration system “a mockery to good immigration policy.” Trump also said the U.S. needs an immigration system that’s based on merit.
