(DEKALB COUNTY, Ga) – By the time Sydney Wilson was in the 2nd grade she knew she was a gifted student. Often teased by her peers for being ‘too smart’, Wilson says she never let it get to her.
“I just stayed on my path,” Wilson said. “I didn’t really feel like I needed to be popular … because, I mean, I like myself.”
That path led her to extraordinary accomplishments. She started taking High School courses at Wilson Academy in Lithionia when she was 10. At age 13, she applied to Spelman College. At 14, (She just had a birthday) she will be the youngest student ever to be enrolled at Spelman College.
Wilson says she found out after Spelman sent her dad an acceptance letter.
“So, he calls me in and he says, ‘Look at the computer!’ So I looked at it, and I just melt,” Wilson said. “I was screaming and I was crying. I ran out to tell my family, and we took a bunch of pictures and posted it on Instagram and everything.”
The teen will start Spelman in the fall. I would say, with the rest of the Class of 2023, but she’ll probably graduate early!
Wilson says, yes, she plans on living on campus with the other students. She plans on majoring in Biology saying she wants to use animal science to create cures for human ailments.
