La Pintura Escandaloso: Modigliani Nude Could Bring Christie’s $100 million

(CNN Money) – Christie’s said the painting “caused a scandal” when Modigliani exhibited it nearly 100 years ago at his “first and only” one-man show in Paris.

“Outraged by the content of the show — which had caused a crowd to form outside the gallery window where one of Modigliani’s nudes was openly on display — the police demanded the immediate closure of the exhibition,” said Christie’s.

Modigliani was an Italian libertine who died poor, at age 35, but not before he painted a lot of nudes.

Christie’s broke a record when it sold a Picasso for $179 million in May. The auction house had expected to get $140 million for the painting, “Les femmes d’Alger.”

The prior record was $142 million for Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies of Lucian Freud,” which was sold in 2013. The current record for a Modigliani is a sculpture that sold for $70.7 million last year.

Christie’s is now hoping to have another  putting the Modigliani on the auction block November 9 in New York. The painting,“Reclining Nude,” dates from 1917 and 1918, the final years of World War I.

And it just might get it, considering the nine-digit prices that Modern Art masterpieces have been getting.

Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game Sells Out

(ATLANTA ) – The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game’s matchup of No. 6 Auburn and No. 25 Louisville is the first major neutral-site game of 2015 to sell out. Peach Bowl, Inc. and university officials today announced both teams have completely sold through their allotments of 30,000 tickets each and no tickets remain for public sale.

“When you get two historically successful, top-25 teams with fan bases as passionate as Auburn and Louisville, you know you’re going to have a tough ticket,” said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. president & CEO. “What a great way to kick off the season with an electric, bowl-like atmosphere with two ranked teams in front of a packed crowd in Atlanta and national TV audience on CBS.”

The game between the Cardinals and the Tigers is set for Saturday, Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the Georgia Dome and will be nationally televised on CBS.

The matchup marks just the second meeting of the two preseason top-25 teams. Auburn won their only previous game in 1974. This will be Louisville’s first Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game appearance and Auburn’s second – following up a 2012 tilt with Clemson.

“To open the 2015 football season in a sold-out venue like the Georgia Dome against a top-10 team is exciting for our program,” said Louisville Head Coach Bobby Petrino. “Our fans have a proven track record of supporting our football team no matter the location, so it’s not surprising they have responded the way they have to this exciting matchup. I know they will help create an outstanding atmosphere as we kick off the season.”

“We look forward to playing in front of a sellout crowd at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game versus a very good .Louisville team on a national stage to open the 2015 season,” Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn said. “We have the best fans in college football and our team looks forward to playing in front of the Auburn Family in the Georgia Dome on Sept. 5.”

The teams will battle for The Old Leather Helmet Trophy, one of college football’s iconic rivalry-game trophies. Traditionally, winners of The Old Leather Helmet don the helmet on the field after the game, starting with the head coach and then rotating from player to player as the team celebrates its victory. The nation’s longest-running kickoff game, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game averages more than 66,000 fans per game – higher than 30 bowl games from last year – and has sold out seven of its 10 matchups. The game’s team payout averages $4.3 million, which is higher than 21 bowl games last season. Television viewership is also traditionally strong with more than 40 million viewers tuning in to the series since 2008.

President Obama’s Trip To Alaska

(SL) – The President is touring through Alaska this week, meeting with residents of the state and seeing the effects of climate change on the ground. He’s sharing what he sees along the way. Read his entry from yesterday below, and follow along with the trip here.

pres.jpgHi, everyone — checking in on day two. Right off the bat, I’ll note that I’ve got to come back here once I’m done being President.

You just can’t see Alaska in three days.

I spent the day hiking through Exit Glacier in the Kenai Fjords National Park — where the mountains collide with the ocean and fields of ice. When the team handed over the camera, I did my best to do this place justice:

Visitors from around the world come here to see its Harding Icefield — one of the largest ice fields in the United States — covering hundreds of square miles. As the climate warms, glaciers are shrinking more and more rapidly — and throughout the park, there are signs marking where the glacier line used to be.jpg.jpg

This is as good of a signpost as any when it comes to the impacts of climate change.

I also had the chance to tour the area by boat and experience the beauty and wildlife of Resurrection Bay. It was spectacular to see the horizon of ice and snow, but it’s melting. And if we don’t act, this simply won’t be here for future generations to enjoy.

Glaciers in Alaska, and the greater Arctic, are shrinking and it’s changing the way Alaskans live. And considering the Arctic’s unique role in influencing the global climate, it will accelerate changes to the way that we all live. Since 1979, the summer sea ice in the Arctic has decreased by more than 40%, a decrease that has dramatically accelerated over the past two decades.bay.jpg

One new study estimates that Alaska’s glaciers alone lose about 75 gigatons — that’s 75 billion tons — of ice each year. What does a gigaton look like? To put that in perspective, one scientist described a gigaton of ice as a block the size of the National Mall in Washington — from Congress all the way to the Lincoln Memorial, four times as tall as the Washington Monument. Now imagine 75 of those ice blocks. That’s what Alaska’s glaciers alone lose…each year.

And the pace of melting is only getting faster.

It’s now twice what it was between 1950 and 2000 — twice as fast as it was just a little over a decade ago. And it’s one of the reasons why sea levels rose by about eight inches over the last century, and why they’re projected to rise another one to four feet this century.

Lewis Hamiliton and Rihann finally address dating rumors.

The couple were romantically linked ever since they were spotted flirting at the annual Crop Over festival in Barbados in August.

They then got cosy as they enjoyed a day of water sports on the island together and were spotted exiting 1Oak nightclub in NYC separately where it’s believed they had dinner together.

Then on August 14, the 27-year-singer and Lewis added fuel to the fire when they were spotted arriving at a nightclub in New York City within minutes of each other.

The pals attempted to go incognito in contrasting outfits as they stepped out to The Griffin in The MeatPacking District.

Lewis is single since splitting from his girlfriend of seven years, Nicole Scherzinger at the start of the year.

A source close to the star told MailOnline at the time: ‘It was a mutual decision. The long distance kept them apart for long periods of time.

The Daily Mail Reports, In March, she told Now magazine that she was looking forward to new ventures.

‘I’m a very spiritual person and I’ve been seeing all these messages saying that even when it’s a new phase, we tend to keep in the old way of thinking,’ she told the magazine.

‘So this year I’m embracing change and looking ahead. I’m just trying to think in a new way and try out new things.’

President Obama Scores Big With Iran Nuclear Deal

Washington (CNN) – In a major victory for President Barack Obama, Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland announced support for the Iran nuclear deal Wednesday, providing the White House the votes it needs to prevent Republicans from scuttling the agreement.

The announcement means that at least 34 senators — the number required by the Constitution to sustain a veto — will back Obama’s expected veto of a Republican resolution to disapprove of the deal. Mikulski is retiring at the end of her term.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md.: Senate Democrats have rallied the 34 votes they need to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive in Congress, handing President Barack Obama a major foreign policy victory. Mikulski became the crucial 34th vote Wednesday morning, declaring the agreement is the best way to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md.: Senate Democrats have rallied the 34 votes they need to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive in Congress, handing President Barack Obama a major foreign policy victory. Mikulski became the crucial 34th vote Wednesday morning, declaring the agreement is the best way to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

While majorities of both the GOP-controlled House and Senate are poised to vote against the agreement, supporters of the multinational accord that aims to curb Iran’s nuclear weapons program are also hoping to get the 41 votes needed to filibuster the bill and prevent it from even getting to a final vote in the Senate.

Secretary of State John Kerry said the administration will continue to try and push support for the deal past the 34 votes they now have “until the last moment.”

“Thirty-four votes are obviously enough votes for the president’s veto to be upheld,” Kerry told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “That is not satisfactory for us. We do want to try to go further. We’ll continue to persuade.”

That prospect upsets some Republicans who believe the historic agreement deserves a final up-or-down vote.

Shackled: Shannon Miles (in yellow) appeared in court on Monday as he was arraigned on charges of capital murder in the shooting death of Harris County sheriff’s deputy Darren Goforth

(Daily Mail) –  A Suburban Houston police officer who was ambushed at a gas station was shot 15 times, Harris County district attorney Devon Anderson said in court Monday.
Shannon J Miles appeared briefly in state district court in handcuffs and shackles and said very little, other than to answer the judge’s questions. He is being held without bond and was appointed two attorneys.
Anderson read the probable cause statement during the hearing, saying that police received a call of an officer down at 8.20pm Friday.

When police arrived at the gas station in the Houston suburb of Cypress, they found deputy Darren Goforth face-down. Anderson said investigators saw surveillance video from the gas station, which showed that Goforth, 47, had just come out of the store after he had pumped gas and that Miles got out of his red truck and approached the deputy.j

‘He runs up behind deputy Goforth and puts the gun to the back of his head and shoots. Deputy Goforth hits the ground and then he continues to unload his gun, shooting repeatedly into the back of deputy Goforth,’ Anderson said.
Goforth was shot 15 times and a witness saw the shooting, Anderson said. She added that the shell casings match the .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun found at Miles’ home. Continue reading Gunman Shot Deputy 15 Times In Houston Gas Station Execution
