(Opelousas, LA-AP) — A 21-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy is being charged with burning down three predominantly black churches in Louisiana. Officials said they acted quickly because they were concerned the suspect would strikegain.
Officers said they are still trying to determine a motive. One possibility is that Holden Matthews was a fan of “black metal,” a subgenre of heavy metal. It has had an association with church burnings in other parts of the world. Matthews is accused of burning three churches in Saint Landry Parish over a ten-day period.
