(Panama City, FL-AP) — Perhaps the hardest hit by Hurricane Michael was Panama City, Florida. The eyewall came through the town on the Gulf of Mexico a little after noon on Wednesday.People inside a hotel more than six miles from the Gulf watched as the roof began to peel off and pieces of it crashed down on cars and trucks outside. Then they smelled gas, but no one was able to shut off the gas while the storm was going on and first responders could not reach the hotel.
People are sharing photos and videos of the destruction in Panama City on social media. Winds were just below Category Five status at 155 miles per hour when the storm reached land.
There are 12-thousand residents in the small town of Panama City Beach and many of them decided to shelter in place instead of evacuating. Authorities said they’ll have to wait until daybreak to get a full look at the damage caused by the storm.
