(Miami, FL) — Officials in Miami say the bodies of three victims have been recovered from rubble in Thursday’s deadly bridge collapse. Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez said today the remains discovered inside two vehicles were being transferred to the Medical Examiner’s office to positively confirm their identities.
The recovery comes the day after authorities said six people died in the collapse of a pedestrian bridge near Florida International University. The NTSB is investigating the cause of the disaster. In related news, the Florida Department of Transportation says it was warned about a crack in the pedestrian bridge that collapsed two days before it happened. In a statement, the agency says it received a voicemail from an engineer about the crack, but it didn’t hear the voicemail until Friday.
The message was left in an employee mailbox, but the employee was out on assignment. The department stressed that the call did not indicate the crack was a life-safety issue. The bridge was in the final stages of completion before it crashed onto the roadway below, killing at least six people.
