Yuli Gurriel Avoids World Series Ban But Gets Suspended For 5 Games For Racist Gesture

By Kennan Johnson

(SL) – Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel will be suspended for without pay for the first 5 games of the 2018 season after he was caught on camera making a racially insensitive gesture towards Yu Darvish in the dugout following his homerun in the 2nd inning.

Gurriel was caught on national television pulling the corners of his eyes in an offense way attempting to joke about Darvish’s Japanese heritage.

He was also mouthing the word “chinito,” Spanish for “Chinese boy.” Darvish, who was born in Japan, is of Japanese and Iranian descent.
Of the act, Darvish said, “It just felt like, ‘Man, again?’ Like, we’re so used to this,” said Chu. “People don’t even pause. They think that this is acceptable, socially, to target Asian Americans in this way, or Asians in general.”
This was an extremely childish act by Gurriel, and it went on to over shadow the fact that his team had just went up 2-1 in the biggest series of his life.
5 games without pay could be enough to teach the 33-year-old from Cuba a lesson, but in my honest opinion he deserves to sit Game 4 and possibly Game 5 for being so inconsiderate in a World Series game in front of a nationally televised audience consisting of people from every ethnic group you could possibly think of.
