(SL) – Let’s all welcome the Atlanta United to the MLS. Great opener at Bobby Dodd Stadium for the expansion team that looked pretty good during their first game in franchise history.
In front of a sold-out crowd, Atlanta United rolled out their 11 starters, 9 of which had no MLS experience prior to tonight, but it didn’t look that way.
Argentina native Yamil Asad scored the first goal in Atlanta United’s history. In the 25th minute, the goal came on a cross from right fullback Mears to the back poster, where Asad was able to get it past Luis Robles…..GOAL!
Atlanta United up 1-0 couldn’t keep that offense going though. It lasted until the 76th minute, when Alec Kann fumbled and Daniel Royer would score the tying goal for the New York Red Bulls in the second half. A few minutes later, Anton Walkes’ own goal made United a 2-1 loser.
During halftime, Commissioner Don Garber said he was left speechless by the atmosphere when he entered the stadium. Garber had been in Florida watching Orlando City prior to arriving in Atlanta. “I was just speechless, and I’m not speechless very often. This is just remarkable.”
Yamil won man of the match. Now that their feet are wet…let’s see how Atlanta United will fair against Minnesota this Sunday. Welcome to it boys!
