(SL) – Last week the Atlanta Falcons went to Los Angeles, scored 41 points and embarrassed the Rams at home. The Falcons hoped to carry some of that momentum into Week 15 as they returned to the Georgia Dome to take on another California team in the San Francisco 49ers, and that they did, as this game got out of hand extremely fast!
To give you an idea of how bad it was, the first quarter was coming to a close, the Falcons had already scored 21 points, and the 49ers were just getting their first 1st down of the game. At that point it was obvious the niners were in for a very long game.
A few years ago when the 49ers went on their Super Bowl run they had one of the best defenses in football, but this 2016 49ers defense is the complete opposite of that, and this high octane Falcons offense took advantage of every mistake, even without their best receiver Julio Jones, who was out with a sprained toe.
In the 2nd Quarter Falcons running back Devonta Freeman fumbled on the goal line for the first time the season. Going into this game Atlanta running backs had a total of 363 touches and 0 fumbles all season. This was a remarkable streak for the young Atlanta running backs, but Freeman quickly bounced back and redeemed himself on the following drive by running through the 49ers defense like they were a middle school team, and breaking a couple tackles before scoring on a 9 yard rush.
By the time the 4th quarter rolled around the score was 38-13 and the Falcons were in the driver seat on their way to a 41-13 victory. This is the second time this season Atlanta has scored 40 points in consecutive victories. The Falcons have now broken the franchise record for points scored with 449. This record was previously held by the 1998 team that made it to the Super Bowl, so that’s a great sign!
Devonta Freeman had an impressive game overall, rushing for 139 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns. All together the Falcons worked the 49ers for a season high 248 yards on the ground, so in my opinion the player of the game is the Falcons offensive line. This offensive line made sure Matt Ryan had all the time he needed to get the ball to his receivers to continue his 200+ yards streak and squeeze in a couple touchdowns. They also made sure Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman had all kinds of lanes to run up and completely through the vulnerable 49ers defense.
The 49er have now loss a franchise record 13 consecutive games. They are 1-13 this season. The Falcons record moves to 9-5, and they will face the struggling Panthers in Charlotte next week, and end the regular season in the Georgia Dome one final time vs the New Orleans Saints.
