(Atlanta, Ga) – Media day took place in the ATL, for the Atlanta Hawks, and one thing stood out for
sure….7’3, Cape Verdean Walter ‘Edy’ Tavarres. This kid is HUGE! He’s one of four rookies signed to the Hawks. Louisville/Dominican Republic guard Edgar Sosa, Lamar Patterson and Terran Petteway round out the rest.
The Hawks have added a lot of height to this year’s team with 7-footer Earl Barron and Tavarres who made one heck of an entrance. Sweet baby Jesus, with his wingspan he’s got to be 8ft.
Tavarres was drafted 43rd overall in the 2014 draft, by the Hawks. Atlanta signed him on July 9th, 2015. Last season he averaged 8pts, 7.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 22.1 minutes for Gran Canaria of the Spanish ABC league.
He led the ABC league in rebounds (274) and blocks (60). He is the first Cape Vearden native to be drafted or sign a contract to play in the NBA.
Recovering From Injuries
On the injured report, Thabo Sefolosha is back looking healthier than ever. As reported last week, he has been medically cleared to resume basketball activities along with Shelvin Mack and 3-point king, Kyle Korver who says he and Thabo have been going one on one basically every day.
Hopefully, they will all be cleared completely, by opening night, as they continue to recover from injuries.
As for Kyle, he’s looking forward to going back to work. Korver said he really had a good summer break. Taking advantage of the downtime, he was really able to spend
time with his family and be in daddy overdrive…as he sweetly put it..a father to his kids. The family man followed by basically saying…and now it’s time for Daddy to go to work! Despite losing DeMarre Carroll, the Hawks have added a nice mix of size, speed and legacy.
The chemistry is still intact and they honestly look like a new team. Completely rebranded, new uniforms and all. Anticipation is wild. People want to see how the ‘new’ Hawks will compare to last year’s Eastern Conference leaders winning 60 regular season games. Atlanta is ranked #9 in ESPN’s pre-season power rankings.
Tim Hardaway Jr. joins the roster. He’s the son of five-time NBA All-star and current Pistons Coach, Tim Hardaway. He lists his father, Michael Jordan, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady as his favorite players growing up. It’s funny.
The last time Tim Hardaway Jr. was in Philips Arena he was wearing a pair of socks emblazoned with an image of Hawks Legend Dominique Wilkins; and now he’s wearing an Atlanta Hawks jersey. #10 to be exact.
Who Will Start At Small Forward
Considering Coach Mike Budenholzer Stated he has yet to decide on a starting small forward, Tim Hardaway Jr., Thabo Sefolosha, Kent Bazemore and Justin Holiday could get an opportunity to run the starting SF position. Let the battle begin.
Coach Bud will also likely fill their final roster spot, quelling speculation that Atlanta may enter the season with only 14 players. Edgar Sosa, Earl Barron, Lamar Patterson, Terran Petteway and DeQuan Jones are all hoping to secure a spot heading into opening night.
Could be a monstrous type return for the 2015-2016 season. They certainly look ready.
Training camp will last Tuesday – Thursday.
